Does Abel Get Home?Abel's Island is an adventurous and intense book. It has a good message about how you are on the inside and not just the outside. The story begins when Abel (a mouse) and his wife Amanda are out on a picnic. A hurricane starts and they have to find shelter. They find shelter and Amandas scarf blows away and Abel runs after it. He tumbles and falls and the next thing he knows he is stranded on an island. He fails in all his attemps to get off the island. Then one day a frog named Gower comes along. brilliantthere are not enough words for this book. enticing and mesmerizing, Neruda remains to me one of the greatest lovers of life. An acute observer of surroundings, a revolutionary, a lover, a man of the world and of the senses. this book is a whirlwind of poetical autobiographical moments and what a wonder it is. recommended to be read quietly and in an atmosphere undisturbed.
a masterpiece.

Islam in an Indonesian world : ulama of Madura
Published in Unknown Binding by Gadjah Mada University Press ()
Average review score:

Ulama of the MadureseTo enhance public policy on Madura, the national Indonesian government has historically been required to cooperate with the Islamic religious leaders, the ulama. The power- position of the ulama depends on the people's need for them. Such a need correlates with the need for instruction of religion on the village level. Hence, what Mansurnoor states is that there is a possibility for the villagers to develop allegiance to others than the ulama. Thus, the ulama may loose the fundament of their position. Mansurnoor's book is well written, well structured and scientifically superb. An extensive and encompassing review of the Madurese's history is given. The discussion of local Islam and it's relation to the state apparatus is particularly interesting. Watching the ulama's role in the contemporary Indonesia makes Mansurnoor's book continuously worthy of note.

Island
Published in Hardcover by HarperCollins (February, 1994)
Average review score:

A tale of heartwarming & inspirational search for happiness.A wonderful story of a man who goes from emotional rags to riches. The dialogue and relationships in this story are extremely funny, touching and real. You can not help but feel Fred's pain, struggle, courage and ultimate success. Although found in many libraries, this book somehow slipped through the commercial crack and is unavailable for purchase. A great read!

The island

Journey to the underworldThis is a great story, very old and yet timeless. If you really are interested in a chance to experience the astrological force of Pluto, then don't miss this opportunity! In some way this force is bigger than human, and still we have to deal with it as good as we can. One big benefit of old mythical stories is that they help us to become familiar with such forces and to learn how to arrange our lives with them. For that I can very much recommend this book.

Island Africa: The Evolution of Africa's Rare Animals and Plants
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Univ Pr (May, 1990)
Average review score:

This is a great book for turning people on to natureThis is one of my all-time favorite books. It is not heavily scientific, but it packs quite a bit of information into a small space. Kingdon treats Africa as a series of ecological islands, each with their own history, geography, geology and organisms. The brilliance of this work is the incredible, original artwork, which Kingdon uses to illustrate his points. Kingdon is an excellent artist with beautiful work, but scientists also appreciate his art because of how he puts so much information into his pieces. In summary, it's a great way to look at Africa, it's a great way to get turned on to ecology, and I've often wished that somebody would do the same kind of thing for other parts of the world.

Island Baby

excellent book!Island Baby is a fantastic children's book. It is a sweet, endearing tale of caring, nurturing, love, separation and letting go. A beautiful example of respect and caring for animals. A great separation tale for children going off to school for the first time. A definite must for any early childhood library...if only it were easier to find!
